DEPUTY TO MR NASH
Mr Hackett Chosen (N.Z. Press AssociationWELLINGTON. June 7. Mr Frederick Hackett, aged 61, member of Parliament for Grey Lynn since 1943, was today elected Deputy Leader □f the Parliamentary Labour Party in succession to Mr C. F. Skinner, who died on April 26. Mr Hackett was born in Southampton and served in
the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy during the First World War. He came to New Zealand in 1921 and joined the Auckland TramXvays Board staff. He was a trade union official from 1922 to 1944. In 1943 he was the official Labour candidate for the Grey Lynn seat and was opposed by the “rebel” labour member. Mr J. A. Lee. He retained the seat for Labour with a comfortable majority. He was Minister of Transport. Marine and PostmasterGeneral in the 1946-49 Fraser Government and was Minister of Labour. Mines Immigration in the 1957-60 Labour Government.
