CLOSER WATCH ON VEHICLES’ TYRES
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, June 7. The Government today announced a tightening-up of regulations on vehicles with poor tyres. Tyres will be included in warrant of fitness examination requirements. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said this was one of several amendments to the Traffic Regulations, 1956. gazetted today. He said the changes were generally a tidying up of existing rules which had some loose ends or were not watertight legally. Other amendments include: — Flashing red lights may be used by fire service vehicles in emergencies other than fires. Similar lights may also be used on tower waggons repairing overhead wires, and breakdown vehicles at accidents. Trucks may be doubleparked while loading or unloading if alternative access to premises is not reasonably available and provided due consideration is given to other road users. ✓ Vehicles may park within 2ft of a fire hydrant instead of 3ft, but must keep clear any circle marked on the road with the letters “F.H.” Agricultural trailers and machines up to 12ft wide may travel during daylight with-
out a special permit, provided the speed does not exceed 15 miles an hour. There is also a relaxation in the permitted length of load overhanging the rear of trucks in daytime.
