N.Z. PLOUGH SHARE

Comparison Of Cost (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 7. A New Zealand-made plough share was produced in the Arbitration Court today by the Secretary of Industries and Commerce (Dr. W. B. Sutch) who said its retail price was less than half that of a similar share imported from the United States.

Dr. Sutch was appearing again before the Court during the application by the Sheepowner’s Union for a 10 per cent, general wage cut. He said the cast iron share produced in court was 17s 5d retail. whereas the retail price of a similar share from the United States was £2 Is Bd. including 6s 7d duty. The local plough share was made by Gillies Foundry and Engineering Company. Oamaru, which the Secretary of Federated Farmers (Mr A. P. O'Shea) had earlier criticised for “over-charging," said Dr. Sutch. He said Mr O’Shea had suggested a monopoly had been given in plough share manufacture, but in fact there were seven New Zealand manufacturers of plough shares. Mr O’Shea asked: “Is it a fact that the importation of certain types of shares to fit imported ploughs has recently been stopped, and the local prices of the shares have gone up to 40 per cent?’’ Dr. Sutch said he did not know that.
