St. Andrew’s Rector Speaks Of Future
St. Andrew's College had enjoyed sueh distinction recently that he was concerned that complacency should not arise, said the new rector (Mr 1 T. Galloway) when he was welcomed yesterday at an Old Boys’ Association luncheon, which •*more than 100 attended. The college had had success in scholarship, in sport, and in the achievements of its old boys and recently was informed of the exceptionally generous bequest by Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon. “It is when things are going ,well in prosperous times that we are most vulnerable and may lose our spirit,” Mr Galloway said. “Already it is clear to me that some of the greatest days of the college were in the 1930’s when it was fighting for survival.* ’
The recent bequest • (of about £150,000) was a handsome gesture of faith in the future of the college and it would enable the board of governors to plan with more certainty, Mr Galloway said. But there would still be calls for the support of parents and old boys. There was so much still to be done. Mr Galloway said he was proud to be appointed to a school which set sound values and service above all else. He had been impressed with the character and leadership of old boys. These were the attributes he wanted to foster. With Hhe reputation of the college as it stood, it was not surprising that more than 50 applications had been received for enrolment in 1974
and 30 for 1975. “You can’t go much beyond that as the boys are not born yet,” said Mr Galloway. “The boys already at school will be in their prime in the twentyfirst century. We must prepare them for what lies ahead then while still preserving the tradition of St. Andrew’s.”
At the old boys’ luncheon Mr Galloway was welcomed by the president (Mr B. J. Moore) and at a Parent-Tea-cher Association meeting last evening he was welcomed by its president (MrR. F. Riggs). Both expressed the pleasure of members at the choice of a rector with an outstanding record of service to education. the armed forces, and the chmjch.
