MISPRISION OF FELONY

Offence Not Outdated (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 6. James Goodey, aged 27, a salesman, has been sentenced in the Central Criminal Court to 18 months’ imprisonment for an offence nearly 700 years old—misprision of felony. He was charged that, well, knowing that felony had been committed by some person or persons unknown, he wilfully concealed the commission of crime. Police said he had failed to disclose to them what he knew concerning the theft of a truck and its £3600 load of fancy goods and toilet requisites. “The Times” says that in February last year the Coiirt of Criminal Appeal said the crime of misprision of felony was out of date and times had changed since 1275. Later. Lord Denning told the House of Lords that he did not think the offence was out of date. The arm of the law would be too short if it was powerless to reach those who were contact men for thieves or assisted them to gather the fruits of their crimes.

Fire In Ship.— Auckland police are investigating a fire which broke out in the linen room of the 700-ton motor ship Vi-ti last night. The ship has been idle since last September. Damage was slight.—(PA.)
