New Industry At Sockburn

A new industry for Christchurch will start in October with the opening by Rheems New Zealand. Ltd. of a plant at Sockburn for the production of steel drums for freezing companies’ exports and other industries.

The company has a twoacre site on the Main South road near the overbridge. A sO9kv transformer is being installed on the site, and water and other services are being provided. “Plant from the United States for making the drums is already on the water." said the general manager of the company (Mr J. His company was an affiliate of the Rheems Manufacturing Company of New York. Mr Herndon said. The company now had plants making steel drums in 20 countries, and the plant at Sockburn would be the fiftieth started by the parent company and its affiliates Mr Herndon said that the steel for the drums made in New Zealand came from several sources, the company obtaining the steel offered at the best prices.
