ADDINGTON MARKET Prices For Store Sheep And Cattle Increase

The very strong feed position through* out the province was again reflected in the levels of values at Addington market yesterday. A store cattle yarding little more than half the size of last week met a very sound sale, with most classes of steer and heifer calves dearer by about 20s a head, and among the older cattle breeding cows gained 20s to 30s a head in a strong sale. Top wether lambs were in demand, and prices rose 2s to 3s a head. The market included some very good lines. Good ewe lambs showed a fractional gain, but other sorts were unchanged. Breeding ewes met a buoyant sale, with a rise of fully 3s a head. Wethers were about on a par, and good two-tooth ewes sold soundly.

STORE SHEEP Although the store sheep and lamb entry was not large there was a bigger and better selecItion of most classes than last week. The market generally had an improved tone for quality lines and the best lambs and breeding ewes showed a definite appreciation. The entry totalled 5526 head, compared with 3187 last week, and included 4253 store lambs (2171 last weeki. 453 two-tooth ewes (29). 399.01der ewes (917), and 421 wethers (70).

I Quite a big gallery followed the lamb sale and there was good competition for the better lines, reflecting the continued favourable weather and the plentiful supply of feed. Quality was improved with some very good big wether lambs in forward condition included. Good to better wether lambs showed a firming of 2s to 3s a head, and the level of values looked to be relatively in advance of fat lamb prices paid in the market on Tuesday. The top price of 55s 6d. which was paid for halfbreds with a lot of wool, was the highest paid this year for wether lambs. Average quality and small and plain wether lambs, however, showed little change, and continued to hold to the values which have been maintained tor several weeks.

Good quality ewe lambs were also in demand, and the best of these also showed a slight gain, with average quality about on a par with recent rates. There was a much bigger selection of ewe lambs than last week when only nine pens were offered, but the tops were not as good. The best of the fine-wool wether lambs made from 45s to 55s 6d. with good at J7s to 40s 6d. plain to average at 27s to 325, and culls at 19s to 245. The calf offering was of good tverage quality with an odd pen of very well-grown forward young cattle. After a modest opening the sale, which was followed by a fairly large gallery, seemed to warm up as it went along and for the limited yarding there was a verysound sale indeed with Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross cattle in both the steer calf and heifer calf sections gaining about 20s a head on last week’s market.
