Medical Books
Sir, —I yvas most interested in the Suggestion of “Fiat Lux” and “Apothecarius” that medical books are interesting to the public. My doctor allowed me to browse in his bookshelf. Opening a book at random, I read about pityriasiform dermatitis and spotted fever of the Rocky Mountains. In a book on skins I saw some bloodcurdling and disgusting pictures of rashes. In a book on psychology I read a chapter about the development of love life which was most disappointing. In a current medical journal there was a case of the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in childhood with unusual radiological features whose aunt had had abdominal colic. From this I have concluded that medical books are impossible to understand and of no interest, at least to this member of the public.— Yours, etc., SCIENCE GRADUATE May 22, 1962.
