Harewood Extensions
Sir, —Indication was recently given that provision of complementary technical equipment has been approved “in principle.” There appears to be no reason to assume from the information supplied to the press that the equipment will be provided for Christchurch airport in the near future. Possibly a worthy diversion alternative for turbo-jets when Mangere is not operational, meriting earlier consideration, would be Paraparaumu, where some of the land necessary to accofnmodate a new 8000 ft runway is already retained. Advantages would appear to include an operational economy, tourists could be off-loaded in the capital city, suitability in the event of national emergency and, in looking to the future, a substitute for Rongotai. I suggest that the best interest of New Zealand as a whole transcends parochialism in all instances when extraordinary expenditure of taxpayers’ money is involved, —Yours, etc., ANALYSIS.
