SOUTHLAND FISH—FROM CHRISTCHURCH

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL. May 22. About 75 per cent, of all Southland retail fish supplies came from Christchurch and this was “ridiculous." said the Southland Fish Retailers’ Association in its submissions to today's sitting of the Parliamentary Select Committee on the fishing industry. “Some fishermen and

wholesalers send fish from Bluff to Christchurch for I sale on the auction floor I there,’’ said th-e association’s 1 president, Mr D. Fairweather, i "We find ourselves buying this fish back at inflated i prices." Also, the fish from Christchurch to Southland retailers was delivered in unhygienic boxes. Mr Fairweather said. “The containers should be prohibited.” . He said that the fish was frozen and of inferior quality ; and less popular with the public. The association cited this as an example for its case against restrictive licensing, and Mr Fairweather said it reinforced the need for greater and more efficient utilisation of our natural resources.
