JUNIOR RED CROSS HAS 3062 MEMBERS

Members of the North Canterbury Junior Red Cross now total 3062. according to the annual report. They assisted in several spheres of Red Cross work during the year, including the good neighbour service, the street appeal and market, visiting the aged and patients at Rann er dale Home. Most circles took an active interest in the Junior Red Cross programme of health, service, and international friendship, the report says. There were 14 health classes in 10 post-primary schools at the beginning of the year, one being a first-aid class composed entirely of boys. Classes included health, hygiene, first-aid, mothercraft and home nursing. Pupils of Te Wai Pounamu College brought honour to the North Canterbury centre by winning the 2nd Sybil Nathan Cup for the circle gaining the highest average marks in practical first-aid. and were runner-up in the Ist Sybil Nathan Cup for the highest average marks in any Junior Red Cross health examination. Goods were distributed locally and overseas. Good woollen garments, and ditty bags containing a woollen garment, soft toy, face doth, soap, toothbrush, pencil and similar items, were shipped to Korea. Thin garments, quilts, and ditty bag® were sent to Hong Kong. A special appeal from Red Cross headquarters for 1000 quilts for Horug Kong resulted in a contribution of 97 from the North Canterbury Junior Red Cross. A lunch-hour group of Technical College students made 300 garments for overseas relief. Dried milk given by children from two postprimary schools was sent to Korea and Hong Kong. Local aid included the Templeton Farm School. St. Joseph’s Home, Marylands. the emergency lodge, the City Mission, the Methodist Children’s home and Nazareth House, which received scrap books, comics, toys and trinkets. Fernwood Hostel for the blind. Children whose families had suffered fire loss were sent gifts, and household goods for family use were also given. For the first time in several years, the North Canterbury Junior Red Cross won a trophy for friendship albums. The St. Margaret’s College junior school Junior Red Cross circle won the Lady Myers gong for the best album made by forms I and II pupils. Several albums were sent in for exchange with other countries.
