Trotting Dividend

Sir, —I would like to dispute Mr Wright’s explanation relative to Tactile's place dividend. With a friend, I was watching the totalisator. Already I had bet on Tactile. After my investment and' a few minutes the place dividend was shown as £1 13s. My friend said: “I’ll wait awhile. The dividend might drop a shilling or two.” However, it did not and just before the totalisator closed he placed £5 for a place. Almost immediately the totalisator closed. Imagine his surprise and disgust when the place dividend was shown. A similar thing happened with Spark Gap. Two minutes before the totalisator closed £1 9s was showing on the place dividend. I placed a place bet on a horse paying £4 5s for a place shortly before the machine closed. To my utter surprise the place dividend was shown after the race as £2 7s 6d Surely the officials concerned could regulate the totalisator more correctly.— Yours, etc., DISGUSTED.

May 6, 1962. [Mr J. B. F. Wright, totalisator manager for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club said that the matter had already been discussed fully and no further comment seemed necessary. However, if the correspondent cared to call on him he would be pleased to discuss the matter further.]
