COLLISION IN FOG
One Dead, 3 Injured
A man was killed when two cars collided head on about half a mile past Templeton about 10.45 o’clock last evening. The man's name had not been released by the police early this morning.
Three men, who were travelling in the other car, were also seriously injured. Their names were not available early today. One of these men sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to Burwood Hospital. The other two—one of whom ,s thought to be more seriously injured than the other—were admitted to Christchurch Hospital.
The accident occurred about 200 yards from Waterhole road. The area was covered by extremely dense fog for most of the night. The fog was so thick that the two St. John ambulances that attended the accident were forced to travel at less than 10 miles an hour when near the scene. A police car that attended was also held up by the fog. The two cars involved were both completely wrecked. After the collision one of the cars came to rest just off its correct side of the road. The other stopped across the middle of the road.
According to Mr D. Diggs, one of the ambulance drivers, the area was scattered with car parts. He said that in the 15 years he had been associated with St. John ambulance work it was the worst accident he had seen. The man who was brought to hospital by the ambulance driven by Mr Diggs was found to be dead on arrival at the hospital. The other three men were brought to hospital by an ambulance driven by Mr K. Stamler. The motor of one of the cars was pushed right under the dashboard. The accident attracted a large crowd of local residents. Dr. R. Watson, of Sockburn, attended the men at the scene.
