NEW LIBRARY OPENED
Riccarton School
The opening of a new library at Riccarton Primary School made Wednesday a “red letter day” in the school’s history, said the chairman of the school committee (Mr D. C. Milne) at a ceremony in the school grounds. ( He expressed the committee’s appreciation for what the Department of Education and the Education Board had done for the school.
The library was officially opened by Mr L. J. Broomfield, a former senior inspector of schools in Canterbury. He said that over the last few years there had been a great deal of improvement in school facilities, but a library was still considered ' a luxury, even though it was the very heart of education. Mr Broomfield appealed to the children to make the best use of the library and to the parepts to encourage their children in its use.
In emphasising the value of a library in encouraging children to read, Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P. for Riccarton. said they should read as much as they could, as widely as they could, while they could.
