Contractors Oppose •Council Rule

‘'Much hostile opposition” was encountered when Halswell County Council staff asked contractors to put clanks across footpaths before crossing them with heavy traffic, the engineer (Mr M. J. Clark) told Thursday’s meeting of the council. “Both the county foreman and myself have been threatened with the loss of our jobs if we try to enforce the by-laws, by contractors who apparently live in the county," Mr Clark said.

Only one firm had co-oper-ated. and drivers were laying planks, Mr Clark said. County by-laws forbid the crossing of a foot-path unless at a proper crossing. Temporary crossings must be approved by the council.
