Election Called In Canada

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) OTTAWA. April 20. Trade, defence and unemployment promise to be the major issues of the campaign for the Canadian Federal general election to be held on June 18. One of the many other issues will be the Progressive Conservative charge of obstructionist tactics in the Commons by the Liberal Opposition, reiterated yesterday by the Prime Minister (Mr Diefenbaker) when he announced the long-awaited election date. The Liberal leader (Mr Pearson) in January, 1961. challenged Mr Diefenbaker to call an election, "the sooner the better.” Active campaigning by all parties really started late last year after prorogation of the last Parliamentary session.
