BUSY WEEK ON TOLLS

Week-End Mail Clearances

The Post Office toll room in Christchurch has come to the end of one of its busiest weeks, which included, on Wednesday, the highest number of toll calls handled during any day. A fair percentage of the 50,000 subscribers made toll balls and at peak hours found that, although the toll room bad up to 50 operators filling every position, there were delays on connexions.

It was a busier week than Christmas, said the deputy chief postmaster (Mr J. W. Lincoln. “On Wednesday we had 8791 toll calls and the telegraph branch has done 50 per cent, more business,” he said.

During the week, an average of 2300 telegrams were telephoned to the Post Office each day, 1500 were telephoned to addresses and about 2000 were -delivered by messengers. The Savings Bank had a busy week too, with both deposits and withdrawals. Visitors to Christchurch are expected to make full use of the demand-withdrawal service when the bank is open on Tuesday. The next mail delivery in Christchurch will be on Tuesday. Pos’men will not make any rounds on Anzac Day. All street letter boxes will be cleared once a day until Wednesday. They will be cleared this morning and then, from tomorrow, each evening.
