ART SALE DELAYED
Spain May Not Sell Rubens (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) MADRID, April 16. The London auction of a Rubens painting of the Duke of Lerma was postponed by the Spanish Ministry of Education today. A spokesman said the Council of State would decide whether the painting, reported to be worth at least £178.000, was to be sold later or bought by the State. The painting was to have been auctioned at Sothebys on May 4 by the Capuchin monastery to which it was willed by the Countess of Gavia, said the Associated Press. The Countess of Gavia, a descendant of the Duke of Lerma, left custody of the painting to the Capuchin monks in her will, but directed that the painting be sold at public auctionn and the resulting funds distributed to Madrid welfare organisations. Some legal experts said these organisations might challenge the official ban on the sale of the Rubens masterpiece, but it was unlikely. It appeared the Government action was intended to delay the sale at least until Spanish art lovers—or the Government itself—could provide funds to buy the valuable Rubens and keep it in Spain. A public campaign to raise such funds apparently made little progress earlier, said Associated Press.
