ADDINGTON MARKET Values Of Fat Lambs Recover; Some Cattle Ease

Good-quality fat lambs recovered last week’s drop at Addington Market yesterday, the entry being much smaller, although quality varied considerably. There were also fewer sheep, but though ewes held steady, wethers tended to be slightly easier. Another big entry of fat cattle again included many unfinished pens. Good steers held their values, but heifers were up to 20s a head cheaper. Cows declined up to 20s a head in sympathy with the schedule drop. Yesterday was the double market before Easter, and there will be no sales next week. The fat stock market will resume on Tuesday, May 1, with store sheep and store cattle being sold the following day.

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry of 1810 head was less than half that of last week, when 4320 were penned. Quality varied considerably, and there was a big sroportion of light lambs of ttle more than store quality. Good medium to heavy and heavy lambs fully recovered last week’s drop of 2s to 3s a head, and the best of the lighter weights also sold soundly; with jsome competition from freezing ■; company interests. Grazier inquiry was also noticed on the ‘plainer sorts. Some very good shorn lambs were forward, and these made up to 56s 7d in a strong sale. I The market was topped by IClarkson Bros. .Mount Hutt) with four at 65s 7d, three at 64s 7d, and four at 59s Id. Sales at 60s Id were made by A. Riddle (Culverden) and W. T. Lambie (Rakaia). T N. Quality again showed a marked variation. Best quality two-tooth wethers opened on a slacker note with values easier by Is to Is 6d a head and as the sale progressed competition diminished and sales became harder to make. There was little inquiry for older wethers which were hard to sell. The ewe market held to about last week’s rates but quality was not as good. An odd pen of top quality sheep could have been slightly firmer. Top price for wethers of 70s Id was paid to Clarkson Bros. (Mount Hutt) and their line of 30 made 69s Id upwards. L. J Chlltem (Ashburton) and G. W. Wright (Springston) both had sales at 64s Id to 66s Id and a sale at 65s Id was made by L. N. Chisnell (Hinds). The estate C. C. Douglas (Culverden) topped the ewe sale with a line of well woolled sheep which made from 35s Id to 40s Id. Sales at 35s Id were also made by D. McGrath (Coopers Creek), and W. L. hnd J. L. Doak (Omlhi). The estate A. Weaver (Rakaia) sold a line of 42 at 32s Id to 34s Id. Values were:— Best heavy young wethers. 64s id to 70s Id. Prime medium young wethers. 52s id to 62s Id. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry of 406 head, compared with 475 last week, again had a large proportion of indifferent and unfinished pens included. These continued to meet a slack market with little inquiry. Good quality steers, however, continued to sell up to late rates and met a reasonable degree of competition, but heifers, although not in big numbers, looked to be cheaper by up to 20s a head. Some very good pens of baby beef steers and heifers were forward and these met a very sound sale The cow market showed a further weakening, which reflected the lower export schedule price. The sale of steers was topped by the estate R. O. Bradley (Charteris Bay) with eight which made from £49 7s 6d to £5l 7s 6d and a North Canterbury vendor had a sale at £5O 7s 6d. H. D. STORE CATTLE A smaller store cattle offering which totalled 87 head, compared with 17* last week, was mainly of boner types which showed a drop in values m sympathy with the change in the export schedule. Competition was also less active. BULLS Fifteen bulls, were offered compared with 16 last week, and these, too, met a quieter sale with values easier and reflecting the lower schedule. One big bull made £5O 7s 6d and other heavy types made from £44 17s 6d, medium-weights sold from £29 7s 6d to £36 7s 6d and light realised £lB 7s 6d to £26 12s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry totalled about 30 head, compared with 35 last week, but not all were in demand. A number of latecalving Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross cows met little interest and were transferred to the store pens. For good, useful dairy types the market showed a definite improvement and there was quite good competition with some outside bidding. A registered Friesian cow made 59gns and the best second, third end fourth calvers sold from £36 to £49 10s, with medium at £25 to £33. Best Friesian heifers sold from £44 to £5O 10s, with medium at £35 to £4l and crossbreds and others at £lB to £3O. VEALERB The veal offering was slightly bigger than last week when 149 head was offered but quite a big proportion of the entry was not finished and met little demand from the trade. For good vealers. however the market continued to hold well to late rates. One pen of large ruhners was forward and there were very few big suckers. Small calves of good quality were also scarce. Several pens of cattle were bought by graziers. Large runners sold at £3l 2s 6d, medium runners to £26 7s 6d and small runners £lB 2s 8d to £2l 17s 6d; large suckeis sold to £22 12s 6d. medium suckers to £l7 17s fid and small suckers £l5 2s 6d to £l7 7s 6d; large calves made to £2O 17s fid, medium calves £l2 2s 6d to £l5 17s 6d and small calves £7 18s 6d to £ll 17s 6d. FAT PIGS When the porker sale began the entry appeared small for a double market and there was keen competition at about late rates but as the sale progressed late entries swelled the market considerably and prices began to ease. Values overall were 3s to 5s a head easier. A large entry of choppers again sold soundly. The baconer entry was the largest for several weeks and Included four and a half trucks from outside districts. Because of the limited killing time before the holidays buyihg power was restricted and values eased by 10s to 20s a head as a result of this. Most of the pigs bought in the sale will have to be held for killing until next Tuesday. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £5 14s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Medium porkers. £8 4s fid to £8 19s fid. Heavy porkers. £9 4s 6d to £9 17s 6d. Choppers, £lO 3s 6d to £l6 Is. Light and medium baconers. £lO 7s fid to £l2 14s fid. Heavy baconers. £l2 2s fid to £l3 6s fid. STORE PIGS A fairly heavy entry of store pigr. consisted mainly of weaners and slips. With an average attendance of buyers, there was very little change in values. Weaners. if anything, could have shown a slight easing of 3s to 4s a head. Values were:— Small weaners, 36s to 425. Best weaners. 45s to 525. Slips. 55s to 68s. Small and medium stores, 72s to 85s. Large stores, £5 to £5 16s.

Temuka Sale Values (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. April 17. More than 100 head of fat cattle were yarded at the Temuka sale on Monday. For the most part quailtv- was good, but on the day the numoers proved too much for butchers. As the sale progressed values eased sharplv. A large yarding of fat sheep met a steady demand, with* values showing little change. The store sheep penning was also large and mixed in qualitv Good rape lambs sold well, but small to medium lambs eased slightly. A large entry of pigs met a sluggish inquiry.
