WHALING IN NORTH
New Company’s Venture (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17. A new whaling company. Gulf. Whaling Industries, Ltd., will begin operating from Great Barrier Island when the new season opens on May The third whaling company to be formed in Auckland in the last five years, it will operate the station and vessels ot the Barrier Whaling Company, Ltd., under a lease agreement signed today. The first company, Hauraki Whaling, Ltd., was placed in receivership in August, 1957, after 20 months’ operation. Barrier Whaling, formed to buy the assets of Hauraki Whaling, followed suit in August last year. Both companies found the venture uneconomic because whales were scarce. The whaling fleet, based at Whangaparapara Bay, Great Barrier Island, consists of four small chasers and a mother ship, the 112 ft Colville, which has just completed an overhaul at Auckland.
