Rusk Blamed For Korean Failure
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
MILWAUKEE. April 17. The United States Secretary of State (Mr Rusk) was blamed last night as being largely responsible for the failure of the Korean War.
The accusation was made by a former general, Mr Edwin Walker, who resigned his commission after being officially reprimanded for extreme Right-wing indoctrination of troops under his command. Mr Walker said Mr Rusk, who as Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs at the time was the leading “policy maker,” was mainly answerable for the “major decisions that did not permit American boys to win the Korean War,” President Truman "didn’t understand what he was doing” and the then Secretary of State. Mr Dean Acheson, "had too many irons in the fire,” Mr Walker alleged. Mr Walker, who is a Democratic candidate for the Governorship of Texas, was addressing 5000 people at Milwaukee in the first of a series of "freedom from tyranny” meetings. He said Mr Rusk "participated in the decision of President Trumen to recall
General of the Army Douglas Macarthur from command" in Korea. He dubbed General Macarthur and the late Senator Joseph McCarthy “the last illustrious names in American history.” Mr Walker described Senator McCarthy as "the initiator and the inspiration for the new wave of patriotism," who had been victimised for “not being allowed to expose the serious threat of communism from within.”
