Flying Ailsa Has Fine Win In Stakes

Flying Ailsa, an easy winner at Methven at her previous start, gained a decisive win in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes at Addington on Saturday. She made most of the pace after recovering quickly from an early break, and ran on strongly when asked for an effort by her driver, F. 6. Holmes.

Raced by Mr L. G. Skurr. of Rangiora, Flying Ailsa is trained at Halswell by D. A Bunz. She is a toree-year-old Ally by Flying Song from a smart trotting mare in Ailsa Craig. Flying Ailsa has taken time to become solid. Her recent efforts suggest that she will take a high ranking. Peel was in second place on the outside of For Certain and just behind Flying Ailsa at the mile post. However, he was beaten six furlongs later. Flying Alisa led to the straight ahead of For Certain, Peel, Cheta, which had moved up fast after breaking early. Zadlos, Crofter, Darkle Hanover, Belroy and King Clovis. Flying Ailsa did not look like being caught and she won by a length from For Certain, with half a length to the lightly-sup-ported Zadios. which was close up throughout. Cheta was a short length back fourth, clear of Peel, Darkie Hanover, Crofter. Belroy and King Clovis. Belroy. Aiblins, Robyn, Great Credit, Cheta. Seafield Lady and Chief Omar gave ground at the start. Fine Sprint Blue Prince made a successful first appearance from C. C. Devine’s Templeton team when he won the Electric Handicap, a sprint over 10 furlongs. He paced the distance in 2min 37 l-ssec, an outstanding effort considering the cold, heavy atmosnheric conditions.

Patchwork set the pace, with Blue Prince about fifth until the three furlongs. He then moved up and joined Patchwork racing to the straight, where they were a length and a half in front of Jay Ar. with the same distance to Sun Chief, and three lengths to Waitaki Child. Zany and King Hal. Blue Prince soon mastered Patchwork, but he had to be shaken up to hold Jay Ar off by a short length. Jay Ar. which paced an improved race, was unchallenged for second, being three lengths in front of King Hal. which finished boldly from the straight entrance. Patchwork tired a little to he half a length back fourth, with six lengths to Sun Chief, half a length to Bonny Starlet and a short length to Zany, which was well clear of the others Brilliant Run Moon Boy, the favourite, recorded a brilliant run to win the Beta Peter Handicap in a close finish with the bracketed pair, When and With You. Moon Boy was towards the rear of the field until the five furlongs. He continued to improve in the back straight, but

was still some distance from the lead.

Mighty Brigade shaded Our Own racing to the straight, with With You, Dianthus Girl, Front Line, Kennoway. When, Spinster Scott and Moon Boy (wide out) handy.

Mighty Brigade looked likely to win 50 yards out, but Moon Boy responded in his best style to win by a nose from When, which was slow away and well back most of the way. With You trotted a sound race for third a head back, a length in front of Mighty Brigade. Our Own and Dark Lorene, which broke twice, were in line next, ahead of Rockn Robin. Spinster Scott and Dianthus Girl. Trotting Stakes Spark Gap, an odds-on favourite. led from end to end in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. At no stage of the race was he really at top and he coasted home to win by eight lengths from Grand Charge which trotted an outstanding race considering it was his first start at a totalisator meeting Spark Gap. a showy colt by Thunder On from Transmitter, is raced by his Christchurch breeder. Mr H. W. Alston, for whom he is prepared

at Weedons by P. C. Williams. He was driven on Saturday by M. Holmes, who has now won this race on five occasions.

Spark Gap trotted the 12 furlongs in 3min 20 4-ssec. fourfifths of a second outside Au Fait’s race record and well outside his own record of 3min 16sec. He took Imin 4 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Grand Charge was in second place all the way and held that position at the finish where he was 10 lengths in front of Dreaming, which drifted badly early and broke at the halffurlong. Snow Globe broke badly at the start and showed speed to be handy at the half-mile. She broke again with two and a half furlongs left, but battled on for fourth five lengths behind Dreaming, with a gap to Acquit, another to Courtella and Waihora Scott, and a long break to War Scene. Made Amends Flying Note, an unlucky sixth on the first day of the meeting, gained a well-deserved win In the Plains Handicap. C. C Devine kept him in the middle of the field until the straight entrance where he was handy to Antonius, Aerobee, Mary Mavis, Stormont, which broke, Urrall. Johnny Thunder. Lucks Wav and Robin Dundee. Flying Note finished much too well for his rivals and he won handily by one length from Mary Mavis, which had every chance. Rcb’’ Dundee made up gro> ,u for third, ahead of Lucks Way, with SUck Chick a good fifth, ahead of Johnny Thunder. Queenson, Urrall. Which showed little dash, Antonius and Pagliacci.
