18 DEAF NO LONGER

New Operation Successful (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. April 14. A newly-developed technique in ear operations performed at the Dunedin Hospital by the eminent German ear surgeon. Dr. D Plester. has resulted in 18 formerly deaf patients having “heir hearing restored. Dr. Plester began the operations on Monday. Each took half an hour. Yesterday, in the hospital ward, the 18 patients, including a young Maori and a Chinese, gathered around the surgeon to express their gratitude to him.

The first patient to be operated on. Mr W. B Richards, made a presentation of a scroll signed with their names and a taiaha of totara.

A member of the Otological Society also made a presentation to Dr. Plester of books on Maori art and culture, and for Mrs Plester, a piece of greenstone jewellery.
