Safe Round At Riccarton
Knight qualified tor hurdle races by schooling competently over four hurdles at Riccarton yesterday He was ridden by K. Quayle. Knight, one of the most successful hacks at the Greymouth meeting last week-end. may race over hurdles at the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting
Sports Date, a winner over : hurdles when owned and [trained in Southland, is also ■being prepared for another [jumping campaign Yesterday. with E. B Skelton up, he did a safe, clean round of hurdles.
Sports Date has not raced since November, but he looks as if he will come to hand quickly
The surprise of the little [fast work done was some free • galloping by Balallan. Ridden by T- Wilson. Balallan 1 finished five furlongs alongside his stablemate Glentarjkin (A. J. Stokes). There was no dawdling, for they ran jthe distance in linin 2 l-sscc and the last nalf-mile in • 49sec.
Balallan has been sluggish in much of his racing and ■ training, but some schooling appears to.have given him a ;fresh interest in galloping
• The Great Easte- topweight. IRoman Maid (G. R Baldwin), I was never near full stretch .while running half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Methuselah iR L. Brownling) and Abou Ben Abhem I <T. Wilson) followed in 51 14-ssec.
Balance <D. N. Hadfield) ran seven furlongs in Imin 37sec and finished a length and a half behind his stablemate Share (L- Williams).
