All work at the three fertiliser works in the Auckland district ceased today. Three hundred members of the Northern Fertiliser Workers’ Union stopped work because of the failure of the union and employers’ representatives to reach an agreement in conciliation over the terms of a new award.
The works affected are the New Zealand Farmers’ Fertiliser Company’s at Te Papapa. Kempthorne. Prosser and Company’s at Westfield, and the Challenge Phosphate Company’s at Otahuhu. The men decided to cease at a stop-w rk meeting at Otahuhu this morning.
The Conciliation Commissioner ' in Auckland 'Mr C. L. Hunter) attempted without success to arrange a meeting tomorrow betw’een the parties.
A spokesman for the employers said the correct procedure when conciliation proceedings failed was to refer the matter to the Arbitration Court tor a decision The employers had offered to do that.
