PROTEST BY CHAMBER
South Island “Ignored” Criticism of the arrangements made for the party of 20 Canadian travel agents, who arrived at Whenuapai on Tuesday to "see New Zealand's scenic attractions" and who will leave Auckland tomorrow without having seen the South Island, was expressed at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce council. Mr E. C. Munt said that while tourist promotion was in the hands of the Government, New Zealand would never be “sold.” Other speakers strongly supported his view that the South Island had been ignored on many other previous occasions. Mr F. G. Hill said that under air agreements, the Canadian Pacific Airlines aircraft which brought the travel agents to New Zealand must leave from its port of entry. “Always Too Late” Mr B. J. Drake said that the same type of thing had been done on many previous occasions and organisations in the South Island had complained. “We are always too late. It has been done and finished with before we complain and it cannot be undone by our complaints. What we need is advance information when these things are about to be done so that we can protest and get them certified. Can’t our airline friends give us some advance information?” he asked. Mr L. G. Holland: These things are done by Government departments, or the departments agree to them. In fact, everything is controlled by the Government. The Government does everything in this country. We should write to every South Island member of Parliament asking them to protest. Mr R. B. McNish said the trouble was that South Island members of Parliament lost their geographical identity when they were in the North Island. Mr Holland: We should remind them of it. The council decided to refer the matter to the chamber’s tourist committee for investigation.
