Main Mission Easter Cup

MELBOURNE, April 5. Although Crown and Anchor is equal favourite for the Melbourne Racing Club's seven-furlong Victoria Handicap, to be run at Flemington on Easter Saturday, the New Zealand-bred gelding's mission is expected to be the mile-and-a-quarter Easter Cup on Easter Monday. The light-weight jockey, W. A. Smith, said last night he would reject offers to ride in the £15,000 Sydney Cup to take the mount on Crown and Anchor in the Easter Cup. Crown and Anchor came into prominence for the major Easter races when he finished brilliantly to run second to Freeman in the seven furlong's Brighton Welter at Caulfield last Saturday. Crown and Anchor was thirteenth of the 18 runners at the top of the straight, and flew home to go down by a neck.
A four-year-old by Able Seaman, Crown and Anchor appears to have big potential as a middle-distance stayer. He has been running well in sprint races and won over six furlongs at Moonee Valley last Saturday week. but. judging by his effort last Saturday, he will be better suited over a longer distance, 10-12 furlongs. The gelding has 8-0 in the Victoria Handicap and 7-12 in the Easter Cup.
