HAAST PASS ROAD
Inspection Of
Progress
Members of the Canterbury and Dunedin chambers of commerce had been invited by the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce to inspect the gap between the road at Pannga and the Haast Pass road next month, it was reported to the council of the Canterbury chamber last evening The visit will be made on either the first, third, or fourth week-end in May.
"Assurances have been given that the Haast Pass road will be opened for traffic in 1964, but we are not so confident.” the letter from the Greymouth chamber said "We hope that through inspections by parties such as curs, and with the resulting publicity, sufficient attention will be focused on the project to ensure that everything possible is being done to hasten the road's completion.”
Mr F. W Freeman said that the Canterbury chamber should write to the National Roads Board giving the board the ''hurry-up" on the Haast Pass road. "You have to battle hard for anything for the South Island nowadays.” Mr FreeAnother member said It had been reported in some newspapers outside Canterbury tHat the road would not be completed until 1967 On the suggestion of the chairman (Mr P M MacShane' it was decided to make no move in the matter until after chamber representatives had reported on the inspection visit.
Jungle Gym.—A small accident rate was inevitable with the use of the jungle gym and o'her types of modem playground equipment, but the value of exercise on ’hat sort of apparatus and the challenge it offered fa- exceeded the risk involved, said the supervisor of phvsical education, Mr D.
