Table Tennis WALLABIES I WINS
Summer Grade Trial
Wallabies I won the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s summer A grade competition for the second year by defeating Wallabies II by 7-5 in a play-off this week. The two teams had finished level in the competition.
The hero of Wallabies Fs victory was the provinciallyranked player K. J. Cassidy Out of action for a period in the middle of the season because of illness. Cassidy has not always done himself justice in the matches played since Christmas, but in this play-off he came back to his best play. His winning of three singles matches contributed greatly to his side's 7-5 victory. R. G. Hart, captain of the winning team, was not quite up to his previous good form, and won only one tingles match. This was more than balanced, however, by the very fine play of the third Wallabies I player R. L. Hulston, whose performances in this summer’s competition were his best for many seasons.
For Wallabies n, M. A Cox did best with two singles victories. K. F. Stevenson, who had won 31 of his previous 33 games, lapsed a little to take only one of his three singles games. Mrs J. Prisk won two doubles for Wallabies n. Results (Wallabies I names first) were:— K J Cassidy beat M. A. Cox. 21-13, 21-9: beat K. F. Stevenson, 20-22 , 21-16. 21-13; beat Mrs J. M. Prisk. 21-6. 21-11.
