Cantabrians To Play N.Z. Universities’ Team

So far no North Island players had accepted invitations to play for the Cantabrians against a New' Zealand Universities' team at Lancaster Park on April 7, Mr J. Storey told the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening.

None of the Auckland players wag available, nor was R H. Brown, of Taranaki, he said. But invitations had been sent to B. Cull and I. N. Mac Ewan. of Wellington. D Spencer, of Southland, and D. Clarke, of Otago. Mr Storey said that the Cantabrian side would be a strong one, and as most of the Universities’ side at present touring North America would be available, the match would be a good one. Training on Sundays

A letter was received from the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Churches which said that the branch was deeply concerned about the Crowing practice of sports clubs arranging training on Sunday mornings. The branch asked that sports clubs co-operate by encouraging team training at times which did not conflict with church activities. The meeting decided to pass the letter on to clubs. He considered the Canterbury

flag at Lancaster Park a “pretty hairy thing," and felt that consideration should be given to its replacement. Mr C. H. McPhail said. Mr McrtiaU was referring to • letter from a Hamilton firm, which offered to supply a Canterbury Rugtoy flag, coloured red and black, with a monogram in its centre. The meeting decided to ask the firm tor a quote. Confirmation was received from the New Zealand union that the inter-island match would be held at Lancaster Park on July 28. Nominations will be called tor selectors for Canterbury A, Canterbury B. Senior Reserve, and Canterbury Cotta teams. Tlie Closing date will be April 24. It was decided to send a colts' team to Nelson at the Queen's Birthday week-end.
