TROTTING Lordship Shows Dash At Addington Trials

Lordship gave a dashing display of pacing when he out> classed a strong field of older horses in his heat of the free-for-all at trials held at Addington yesterday by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders’ Association.

Lordship made a splendid start and led practically from end to end. He turned for home with a lead of about two lengths and increased his margin to four lengths over the final furlong after sprinting the last two furlongs in 29 4-ssec.

Lordship has been entered for the main middle-distance races on the three days of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Chib’s Easter meeting at Addington next month. He will be on 12 yards in the Rattray Handicap and the Williams Handicap on the first two days of the meeting, •nd on the limit in the £1750 Easter Cup on the final day. Lordship has obviously thrived since he raced at the Dunedin Festival Cup meeting at Forbury Park in January and he will be in demand in his races at Addington. He requires one distance win to qualify for the next New Zealand Cup. Lordship paced the 13 furlongs on a fast track in 3min 30sec, the last half mile comfortably in Imin Zsec. Mary Mavis, a failure in the Timaru Cup at her most recent start, was close up all the way and she ran on gamely for second without appearing likely to test Lordship. She has freshened up well and should pay expenses at Addington.

Queen Ngaio also had every chance and she was not pushed to finish a close third, a length in front of Gay Alabama, which moved up to be second over the last seven furlongs.

Lucks Way. Zenith, which was well back most of the way, Lookaway, Aldora, Ceremonial and Stormont headed the others.

Lookaway and Aldora, which are booked to leave in about four weeks for the United States, paced sound races. Both were at the rear of the field early, Aldora following Lookaway through over the last mile. Lookaway and Aldora are both certain to show improvement as a result of the race and they should be close to their peak for the Addington meeting. They will be able to compete on all three days before their departure for Sydney. La Storm’s Win La Storm, a stablemate of Mary Mavis, showed that he was close to his best when he won the first heat of the free-for-all He paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 33 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 2 l-ssec.

La Storm was about ninth when the field settled down, but he improved to be sixth at the six furlongs, He ran out the final furlong in solid style and won handily by a length. He will contest slow-class pacing events at Addington. Happy Hunting. which looks to have done well since he last raced in November, was not seriously pushed to finish second. He gained two wins and a second from four starts in the spring and should add to his record in his next few starts. Johnny Thunder, which led early, was elose up for the remainder of the race. He ran on well for third and looks ready to race well. First Song, which forced most of the pace, tired a little to finish fourth. He has freshened up well since he raced at New Brighton more than a month ago. He is always capable of surprising and could show to advantage at Addington. Aquaplane was a good way back in the middle stages of the race and he ran on well for fifth, ahead of Schnapps, which looks in great heart. He was not pushed in the straight after having every chance.

Prince made a bold showing to finish seventh. He was • little slow at the start, but was handy enough over the last mile. He looked likely to take part in the, finish until his condition gave out with 100 yards to go. Prince pulled up well and it looks as if he will stand up to another searching preparation.

Meadow Scott was very alow away and he did ■well to finish eighth. He was driven by J. D. Litten. who has had little driving in recent months.

S.va. Jojabrod and Wendy Dswn won the three beats, of

the Two-year-old parade, run over one mile and a quarter.

Siva, which met trouble and lost all chance at the start of the Two-year-old Stakes at Methven on Saturday. began speedily in the first heat and led all the way to win by a length and a half. Siva looks improved and he will be a sound place pros, pect in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes next month. Waltz Away, which missed the scant at Methven, was close up yesterday and held on for second, a neck in front of an improver, Yale. Light Silk, which has not come on as well as expected, was beaten off fourth, ahead of a colt by Morano from Gay Edith, which showed speed after a slow start.

Siva paced the 10 furlongs in 2min 49sec, the last halfmile in Imin 5 2-ssec.

Jojabrod won the second heat in 2min 47sec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 4-ssec. Earl Globe set a solid pace, being trailed to the straight by Jojabrod, which finished well to beat him by a head. Earl Globe has also improved lately. He did well to finish fourth at Mathven and should return a dividend before the end of the season.

Giant’s Causeway was not knocked about to finish a disfont third, clear of Midnight Lace

Honourable Son, Morven Lad and Free Land began

fast and sat a strong pace in the third heat, pacing the first two furlongs in 34 l-ssec. Morven Lad broke at the end of a furlong, Free Land continuing in the lead until the three furlongs where a slow beginner, Field Chief, improved to take control. Wendy Dawn finished gamely along the inside in the straight and beat Field Chief by a length, with a neck to Gay Gordon, which was clear of Robin’s Return. Then came Honourable Son, a colt by Caduceus from Royal Routine. Honourable Son is not as experienced as most of the youngsters he met yesterday and he was far from disgraced. He should eventually be a worthwhile winner. Hustler In Form Hustler, a member of R. J. Kerr’s Yaldhurst team, made all the pace in the 3min 45sec class pace and held on over the final furlong to beat Deep Lead and a likely improver. Thunderbolt, by a length and a half after pacing the 13 furlongs in 3min 34 4-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 4-ssec. and the last quarter in 31 4-ssec.

Thunderbolt will make a fresh start in the Masterton Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday. He trailed all the way and ran on welt He looks in good order and might not be long in showing form. Deep Lead ran on well for second. He has held his form well and should extend his record at Addington. Smoke Concert paced an improved race for fourth, ahead of Black Student. Viviens, Commonwealth and Enrich,

Snow Globe, a winner at Methven last Saturday, showed that she will be the hardest for Spark Gap to beat in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes on April 14 when she won the 3min 56sec class trot. She made all the pace and won easing up by four lengths from Benachie after taking 3min 37 3-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in the smart time of Imin toec. and the final quarter in 31 2-ssec. Snow Globe has im. proved considerably in recent weeks and it appears as though she is at her best on hard tracks.

Courtella, another Trotting Stakes candidate trotted a useful race for third a length away, well clear of Grand Charge, Medieval and Composite. Hiya overcame a slow start to win the 3min 52sec class pace in a close finish with Crofter, which lost ground early, Furv River and Iniquitous Hiya. which looks an early winner, recorded 3min 35sec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 5 l-ssec.

Chief Omar and Vivace woo their respective heats of the 3min sGsec class pace. Chief Omar took 3min 36 2-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 2 4-5 sec while Vivace recorded 3min 35 3-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 5 4-ssec, Ruling Caste finished second to Chief Omar, with the others beaten off, while Junior Royal was a good second to Vivace.
