DAIRY FACTORY FIRE
Cheese Hand Remanded (N.Z. Press Association) HAWERA, March 21. Graeme Lindsay McNamara, an 18-year-old cheese hand employed at the factory, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully entering the T. L Joll Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., benzine store with intent to commit a crime when he appeared before Mr A. W Yortt. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court. Mr Yortt was told that a fire in the factory early on the morning of March 5 caused damage totalling £2257 5s 3d. McNamara was remanded without conviction for a probation officer’s report. Bail was fixed at £lOO with a similar surety. Detective - Sergeant G. Hogan said McNamara was attempting to get petrol from the store for a friend when he dropped a petrol pump. It hit a metal drum and petrol in a jar exploded. McNamara was burnt about the arms and legs in getting out but he raised the alarm.
A.A. Membership.— With 325 new members elected since the last meeting, total membership of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) reached 48,943. Members of the executive were told that this figure was very satisfactory.
