Credit For China?
Sir, —I compliment you on your sub-editorial. I toured the industrial districts of China last December and January. Seventy per cent, of the shipping using the port of Shanghai is British, and China trades with many countries. The last three years were not good years, and agriculture suffered as the result of three years of drought. The drought is now broken and prospects for the coming years are much better. China imported from Australia and Canada and will continue to do so. New Zealand must develop markets in Asian countries, and China offers a good prospect for markets. However, it is not a matter of lending money to China, as they can supply in return for our goods equipment we need to develop our industries. I have in my possession two catalogues listing the goods China can export, such as heavy machinery, dental and surgical equipment, motorcars and heavy trucks (four and eight ton), silk, satin, and cotton goods, etc. These catalogues are available for perusal by anyone interested. —Yours, etc., L. C. SOUTHON. March 21, 1962.
