‘’Poor Literature*’ Deplored tHZ Press Association) ROTORUA. March 21. "One of the great tragedies of the Maori race is the poor literature they read.” said the Mayor of Rotorua (Mr A M. Linton) at the opening of the Associated Booksellers' conference in Rotorua this morning. "Our race relations are given publicity all over the world, but they will not last if we are divided in intellectual capacity.” he added. In his annual report, the president 'Mr J. Woods) said booksellers were pleased that the Government desired to free book imports from licensing control and to exempt from import licensing books by New Zealand authors. Booksellers were conscious of the difficulties faced by the Government, but hoped the Government would implement its pledge in the near future.
