AUCKLAND WOOL
Firmer Tone At Close ( N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 21. There were no spectacular price changes during the first day of the third main wool sale in Auckland today. Toward the end of the day, the market firmed and bidding became brisk, particularly in the last catalogue. Top prices for the day were obtained in this catalogue, when two bales of binned Southdown crossbred fleece wool brought 55d and 13 others made 50d.
A limited offering of combing fleece was in the seller’s favour when compared with prices at the Wanganui sale last week, but prices for second-shear wool remained unchanged. The prices for lambs wool were slightly irregular. with average style lots a trifle easier. The three catalogues offered today comprised 25,509 bales drawn from all the growing districts in the Auckland province. The competition came mainly from the Continent Italy, a consistent buyer of lambs wool at recent sales, was more active than usual, and the United States bought substantial quantities of second-shear fleece for its carpet trade. The Bradford trade bought sparingly, maitHy because the offering of good-length fleeces was limited. Japanese competition was also light. The sale will be continued on Friday.
