ADDINGTON MARKET Firm Values For Lambs And Younger Ewes

There was another good sale for store lambs at Addington market yesterday, with wether iambs making to 39s and ewe lambs to 50s 6d. Although slightly erratic at times values were generally in line with last week’s improved rates.

Two-tooth ewes also sold soundly, with Romneys of good quality frequently making between 70s and 80s.

Most of the older ewes sold at 30s or less, and at these rates were certainly no better than late rates and possibly slightly easier. The sale was punctuated bv heavy showers of rain, which no doubt affected the attendance and certainly detracted from the appearance of the sheep.

The entry totalled 17,778 head, compared with 20,548 last week, and included 6672 store lambs (5503 last week), 2967 two-tooth ewes (4564), 7699 older ewes (9160) and 420 wethens (1301), STORE LAMBS Store lambs generally met another sound sale at last week's improved values, but the market tended to have a slightly erratic tone at times, particularly for the lighter and plainer sorts. Good lambs, however, which made up a sizable proportion of the market, met a strong sale with plenty of competition throughout. The entry was bigger at 6672 head, compared with 5503 last week. There were quite a few lines of shorn wether lambs forward which met a good firm sale, but most of these were of average to good quality. Some of the better quality woolly wether lambs looked to show a fractional gain, reflecting the ample feed position. For ewe lambs there was a keen demand for the top quality pens but the average and indifferent pens made no more than comparable wether lamb values. Some excellent quality fine-wools were offered and the best of these ranged from 50s to 50s 6d in several sales. Ewe lambs generally sold fully firm on last week's good rates. The best of the fine-wool wether lambs made from 33s to 38s 6d. with good at 29s to 32s 6d, average 24s to 28s 6d and small and Inferior at 12s to 20s. Good shorn wether lambs changed hands at 26s to 295, with others at 18s to 24s 6d.

For ewe lambs the best of the fine-wools made 80s to 50s 6d, with good at 35s to 425, average 25s to 32s and others 16s 6d to 22s 6d. Good Romney and Romney cross sold to 465.
