ENGLISH PARK
£BO,OOO Needed For Work Because of the “dilapidated and almost disgraceful condition” of English Park, it might be necessary to close it in the interests of public safety if early improvements were not made, said Cr. P. J. Skellerup, chairman of the reserves committee, to the City Council last evening. It had been estimated that approximately £BO.OOO would be needed to bring the park up to standard, he said. The reserves committee felt that the accommodation at the park was not only a poor advertisement for the city, but was dangerous in parts if used by the public The finance committee had been asked to give favourable consideration to granting £25.000 to £30.000 from money received from the sale of Milk Company shares to improve the park.. If the council could undertake substantial improvements. the Canterbury Football Association might be able to contribute quite a considerable sum to assist the work, Cr. Skellerup said. ’’Anything we can do to Improve the facilities would be worth while.” said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). Al! councillors were invited to inspect the park next Saturday morning.
