NEW GARDEN FENCE

£2OOO Gift To City

A new fence for the Botanic Gardens along Rolleston avenue, estimated to cost £2OOO. will be financed by Cr. W. S. Mac Gibbon. His generosity was applauded by the City Council last evening. The existing hedge had outlived its usefulness, and each year it was deteriorating, the reserves committee reported. It was planted more than 90 years ago. A stone and wrought iron fence would be the most desirable replacement, the committee said. The cultural buildings associated with the Rolleston avenue approach to the gardens contributed much to the dignity and charm of the gardens, and a fence as proposed would harmonise with and conform to the architectural qualities of the Adjacent buildings. The erection of the fence would be undertaken as much as possible by the department’s staff, the committee said, but it would be necessary to obtain a mason for the stone work.
