FESTIVAL OF THE PINES

Phoenix Theatre Participation

The Phoenix Theatre’s production of Charles Broussard’s adaptation of Dumas’s "The Three Musketeers,” was one of the two major plays presented at the New Plymouth Festival of the Pines this year. The other major production was "The Lark," bv Jean Anouilh in which the Christchurch actress, Christine Batstone, played Joan of Arc.

Mr Alan de Malmanche, of Christchurch, who returned from New Plymouth recently. after being artistic director for the festival, sa’d that audiences were down to about 7500 at each of the productions, compared with 15 000 la*t year for one play, and 19.000 in 1960 for one piav the year before. The Brooklands Bowl, where the festival is presented, seats about 20.000. Mr de Malmanche believes the smaller audiences may have been caused by the abolition of the family and season tickets on which there have been fairly large sales beforehand in former years The Festival of the fines was first held in 1958 Mr de Malmartche’s association with the festival began in 1959 when be was director of a production of "A Midsummer Night's Dr. am" Since 1960 he has been artistic director for the whole festival. He considers the festival unique in New Zealand and bejjeves that it will continue.
