EXPLOSION OF TANK WAGGON

Bitumen Sprays Across Road (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 19. A bitumen tank waggon blew up at the corner of Pirie and Austin streets. Mount Victoria, today, splattering the road poles and wires for yards around with hot bitumen. Nobody was hurt. The explosion threw 100 to 150 gallons of bitumen, heated to a temperature of 320 degrees, out of the 1900gallon tank. Bitumen ran down the gutters of Pirie street, the steep street leading up to the Hataitai train tunnel, like water. It is believed excess pressure in the tank blew open a safety catch.
