15 IN TWIST CONTEST
World-Record
Attempt
The 15 competitors in the marathon twist dance contest which commenced in the Caledonian Hall at 8.5 p.m. yesterday were still twisting without apparent fatigue at midnight last night. They were then four hours on the way to winning a cash prize of £lOO and breaking the world record for the twist of 99hr 26min set in Wellington last week.
A further prize of £lOO. given by the sponsor, a city dry-cleaning firm, will go to the spectator who estimates by midnight tonight which contestant will win and what will be the time set. About 700 young people watched the contest last evening and also danced the twist on the available floor space in the hall. The seven girls and eight boys in the contest have a 15-minute break from dancing every four hours. During the contest they are watched by judges who disqualify when the dance routine is broken.
The contestants are expected to continue twisting until Wednesday at least.
