Six Children In Hospital After Taking Poison

Six young children have been admitted to Christchurch Hospital during the last week after consuming poisonous substances they found at home. Two of them were still in hospital yesterday. “Parents don’t seem to learn,” said the medical superintendent-in-chief (Dr. T. Morton) yesterday. "Admittedly, it is difficult keeping an eye on young children all the time, but it is very necessary, as is shown by these poisonings ”

Jonathan Sharp, aged one year 11 months, of Sewell street, Linwood, ate silicone furniture polish. He was admitted on February 5 and discharged next day. Pamela Taylor, aged one yeai nine months, of Torrens road, Hillmorton, swallowed bluestone. She was admitted on February 5 and sent home on February 6. Paula Jean Morton, aged two and a half years, of Abbey place, Shirley, was admitted on February 6 after consuming a mixture containing codeine. She was sent home after a day in hospital Three-year-old Vicki Miles, of North parade, Shirley, took a mixture of a codeine sedative and an anti-hista

mine. She was admitted on February 6 and sent home the same day Shona McDonald, aged one year and a half, of Rutherford street, Woolston, drank kerosene. She was admitted to hospital on Saturday and was still there yesterday, when her condition was said to be satisfactory. Gerron Hatter, a 13-month-old boy, of Northcote, ate floor polish. He was admitted on Sunday. His condition is satisfactory.
