New Diesel Engine For Land-Rovers
'J’HE new 21-litre diesel engine now used to power Landrover* develops 62 b.h.p., an increase in power of 20 per cent, over the old 2-litre model.
Rover engineers have used the same basic design for the new unit so that it is a* robust as its predecessor, but with the new engine fitted the governed maximum speed of the regular vehicle is increased from 52 mile* an hour to 60 miles an hour. The long-wheelbase Landrovers, because of the larger tyres fitted, now have a governed top speed of 66 miles an hour. Fuel Consumption The factory claims that fuel consumption has not been appreciably affected, except when the higher speeds are used, and up to 28 miles a gallon can be expected. New feature* In the engine include '«pecially-designed combustion chambers, which, among other advantages, greatly improve cold starting. The factory claim* its engineers have, in tests, obtained quick starts with ambient temperatures as low as minus 30deg. centigrade. Normal cold starting is assisted by glow-plugs operated by the ignition switch. Extra Strength To allow the engine to run satisfactorily up to 4000 rp.m. full load; the fuel pump is now fitted with a speedsensitive automatic advance. The crankshaft itself is of increased stiffness with bigger diameter crankpins and fillet radii. A new rear oil seal has been developed.
A heavier flywheel ha* been flitted, and the sump now ha* a stiffer flange. The cooling capacity ha* been increased by use of a large radiator and fan. Oversquare The capacity of the engine is 2286 C.c. and it is llighUy oversquare. Compression ratio is increased from 19.5 to 1 to 23 to 1, and torque has increased from 871b/ft st 2000 r.p.m. to 1031b/ft at 1800 r.p.m., giving much improved "lugging” in the higher ratio*.
