ENTRIES, RECORD TIMES FOR STANDING KILOMETRE

L’NTRIES have been reJ j ceived from members of several South Island car'clubs for the Ashburton Car Club's New Zealand championship Sprint standing start kilometre and record attempt on the Longbeach road, just south of Ashburton, tomorrow.

Attempts will be made to break records in several classes for the standing start kilometre. Early entries among the more interesting competitors trying to establish new figures for the kilometre include M. F. Stanton's

4840 e.c. Corvette-angined special.

Dragster Another intereating entry is G. M. Hoare’s 4796 c.c. G.M. special slingshot dragster from Dunedin. Stanton's car is well known al South Island meetings, and his attempt to break the record of 2fl.7seec set by J. Tutton in a Jaguar XKI3O in 1956 stands a reasonable chance of cussess, providing the corvette's driving chains hang together. Same Class

Hoare’s dragster will compete in the same class (3600 co. to 5000 c.c.) as Stanton’s machine. Unlike Stanton's, his car is specially built for this type of event, but if the Corvette is in form he will need to go well I. G. Pethig in a Wolseley 1480 c.c. will attempt to lower P. M. Hoare’s record of 26.19eec (85.4 miles an hour) set in a Maserati in 1956. A. K. Pratley in a 948 c.c. Triumph Herald will try to break E. M. Watts’s Dyna Four record of 34.625ec.
