ATHLETICS ELEVEN RECORDS BROKEN AT WEST H.S. SPORTS

D. Alexander and J. .Gilberthorpe, the only boys from the Christchurch West High School who compete in interclub events on Saturdays, were the outstanding competitors at the school’s annual athletic sports at Rugby Park yesterday. A finalist in the national junior half-mile last year, Alexander has done little running this season because of illness, but a heavy track and lack of competition did not prevent him from breaking both the senior 220 yards and 440 yards records by 11 sec and I.3sec respectively. „In preliminary events, Gilberthorpe set a fresh mark in the intermediate shot put with 40ft 4jin, and threw the discus 143 ft 4in. which bettered the existing mark by 21ft Ilin. In a special attempt to break the senior discus record with the heavier discus, Gilberthorpe was successful. again by a substantial margin. Another splendid performance was that of J. Stead in the intermediate long jump. He leapt 19ft sin to break the previous record by 3in. It was an excellent effort on a slippery approach. The winner of the girls’ intermediate championship. H.
