Seaman Fined For Assault
George Forester, aged 20. a seaman aboard the British freighter Westmeath, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting the ship’s master (Captain H. T. Jones) aboard the ship, on Tuesday evening, when he appeared before Messrs R. H. Duff and J. D. Morse, Justices of the Peace, ■«n the Magistrate’s Court. Lytteltop. Forester had threatened the master after being refused a cash advance and had shaped up in a threatening manner, said Sergeant R. Wales, giving evidence. An officer from the Westmeath said that Forester was lazy and dodged his work.
A fine of £5 was imposed by the court.
Civil Defence Control.— The Municipal Association will ask the Counties’ Association to assist in setting up a combined committee to develop a civil defence scheme for New Zealand. Delegates to the Municipal Association conference in Auckland said that any civil defence schemes should be run by local authorities and not the G overnment.—(P. A.)
