Magistrate’s Court Young Man Drove Dangerously While Disqualified

A fine of £25. with three years’ further cancellation of his driver's licence, was imposed on Ashton Clifford Salter. aged 20, a workman, when he pleaded guilty before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, SAI., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to a charge of driving in a dangerous manner in Papanui on February 1.

Salter also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified on the same date. On this charge he was convicted and remanded on bail until March 16 for sentence.

Sergeant V. F. Townshend said the accused was seen driving a car around the Papanui roundabout at 9.15 p.m. He was checked at 40 miles an hour. The accused later left the car parked and made off. Interviewed by the police next day he admitted the offences.

Sergeant Townshend said that Salter, who had nine previous convictions, had been convicted of a traffic charge on August 29 last year, and had been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Salter told the Court that the offences were stupid, and they would not happen again. He said he would leave the Papanui area soon, and this was the district where he had got into trouble. The coming football season would occupy most of his time. IDLE AND DISORDERLY Thomas William Edward Weaver, aged 54. was remanded until March 16 for sentence when he pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, on March 8. Sergeant B. D. Read said that the accused was found by a police patrol asleep in South Hagley Park at 2.40 a.m. yesterday. Weaver was lying in a sack, with his feet in another sack, and was covered with newsppers. He was unclean, and had 5s in his possession. Weaver told the police he had been unemployed for eight weeks and had been sleeping in Hagley Park for seven weeks. He said he had been using money from his Post Office savings account, but the book was on him, and it showed the account was empty. Weaver said that every time he answered an advertised job it was taken when he got there. SUSPENDED SENTENCE Found wandering in the streets of the city at 4.30 am. yesterday, Clifford Alan Lambert, aged 39, told a constable that for the previous few nights he had been sleeping in Hagley Park and had been eating scraps of food he had gathered, said Sergeant Read. Pleading guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, Lambert was ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. Lambert told the police he had a job and would receive his first pay next week, Sergeant Read said. OBSCENE EXPOSURE Pleading guilty to a charge of obscene exposure at New Brighton on January 21. a man was convicted and remanded on bail until March 16 for sentence. The man, whose name was suppressed, was represented by Mr B J. Drake. Sergeant Read said that about 3.30 p.m. on January 31 the accused exposed himself obscenely in the New Brighton sandhills to two girls, aged 15 and 16. The girls complained to the New Brighton police, but the man could not be found, he said. On March 7 the girls saw the accused serving behind the counter in a city shop, and he later admitted the offence to the police. Mr Drake said that his client came to New Zealand from Australia four months ago. He has no adult convictions and intended to seek medical advice. LICENCE CANCELLED On a charge of tailing to stop after an accident in Lincoln road on December 14, Peter Terence Stewart, aged 20. a clerk, was convicted and fined £lO, and bis driver's licence was cancelled for six months. He pleaded guilty to this charge and to charges of driving without due eare and failing to ascertain if any person was injured after an accident, on the same dare. On the charge of driving without due care. Stewart was fined £5. and on the other £7 10s. Sergeant Townshend said that the defendant was making a right-hand turn in Lincoln road when he collided with a woman motor-cyclist, who was treated at the Christchurch Hospital for injuries. Stewart was found by a traffic officer several blocks from the scene of the accident. Sergeant Townshend said. On his own behalf, Stewart said that he panicked after the accident. "It was a silly thing to do. and I am ashamed of it now." he said. CHARGES ADMITTED On charges of driving without due care and attention and having no driver's licence at Burnham on January 23. William Steven Wanhalla. aged 21, a soldier, was lined £5 on each. He admitted both charges. Sergeant Townshend said that at 5 p.m. a rental car, driven by Wanhalla, got out of control while attempting to overtake a truck about two miles from Burnham. The car was travelling ebout 40 mile* an

hour, and it collided with the truck. Wanhalla told the police he had been on a drinking spree during the day and had visited numerous hotels between Oxford and Dunsandel He was a first offender. CHARGE AMENDED A charge of driving in a dangerous manner on November 5. against Reginald Edward Rudhall, aged 20. an apprentice compositor, was amended after evidence had been heard, to a charge of failing to give way to the right. Rudhall (Mr G. S. Brockett) pleaded not guilty to the original charge and guilty to the amended charge. He was convicted and fined £4. The charge arose from an accident at the intersection of Clarence road and Elizabeth street at 6.50 p.m. involving the defendant's ear and a ear driven by Robert Gordon Patrick Dunne. Mr Brockett said the prosecution had not proved that the defendant was travelling at an excessive speed. He did not call the defendant to give evidence. CHARGES DISMISSED Charges against Dion Harvey, aged 50, a taxi proprietor, of failing to stop after ah accident and failing to ascertain if any person was injured, were dismissed. Harvey (Mr A. D. Holland) pleaded not guilty to both charges and also to one of failing to give way to his right. On the latter charge. Harvey was convicted and fined £7 10s. The three offences were alleged by the police to have occurred at the corner of Stanmore road and Gloucester street on December 25. REMANDED On a charge of burglary at Christchurch on March 5, Norman Desmond Petrie, aged 22. was remanded until March 16. Bail was refused. The defendant was fined £2O, and his driver's licence was cancelled for a veer. Adolfs. who pleaded not Ituilty was represented by Mr B. J. Drake Evidence was given that Adolfs struck a woman who had just alighted from a bus in Ferry road near Aidwins road, injuring her extensively.
