Stocktaking Time For Grocers
(From Our Grocery Correspondent)
The end of the financial year is looming up and for grocers it is time to start stocktaking. Many grocers allow their stocks to run down at this time of year so that their stocktaking will be more simple. The most popular method of stocktaking for grocers these days is to tally stock at retail prices and reduce the total by the appropriate percentage. This saves a lot of costing and calculating. Little shipping is coming from overseas just now because import licensing has slowed down imports at this time of year. Coastal shipping is giving prompt delivery to merchants and this year there have been no delays in shipments of sugar. Rice Prices.—Rice crop tailures have caused rising prices on Asian markets. Siam, a major supplier, is already push-
ing prices up. Latest advice shows the rise st about 3s per cwt. American rice, almilar in quality to Siam rice, is also likely to be dearer. Plastic Jam Jars.—Clippa plastic jam jars, mentioned in this column last week, are not completely unbreakable. The manufacturers say the Jars will stand rougher handling than the conventional jam jar, but are likely to crack if dtopped. However. the jars will stand up to boiling liquids and deep freezing. Canned Mushrooms.—Watties have been canning mushrooms for some time, but have not been able to keep up with the demand. Now bigger supplies are to come to the South Island and this should mean ample stocks for merchants. Watties have helped fill the gap left by imported canned mushrooms.
Pineapple Juice.—Gregg's subsidiary company in Rarotonga is to produce crushed pineapple and pineapple juice. The crushed pineapple will be in 13oz cans, at Is lOd. and the pineapple Juice in 12joz cans, at Is Bd. Stocks are limited because of restricted production. If quality is up to the standard of the orange juice sales should be automatic. English Herring—Maconochiee’ herrings from Britain will be dearer from June 1. Buyers have been invited to place orders now at the present price. Shipments will be made in late Ma,* to arrive in the new licensing period.
