TWO CARS HIT BARRIER
Twice within about two hours, cars struck the wooden barrier arm at the Riccarton road railway crossing on Wednesday night.
The first accident occurred about 8.30 p.m. when the barrier was struck by a car driven by Christopher Panayiotis, aged 20. a motor mechanic.
About 10.15 pm.. Traffic Officer G. R G. Millar was directing traffic at the crossing. He was flashing a red torch and had a reflecting belt.
When a 1950 model English car approached he saw it was not going to stop. He was speaking to Miss Elizabeth Karen Moore, of 33 Brockworth place, and he told her to run. He jumped clear himself as the car smashed into the unlit barrier arm.
Miss Moore was struck on the head by a piece of timber that flew off the arm as it was smashed. She was treated at the Christchurch
Hospital for facial injuries. Traffic Officer Millar said the driver of the car had not seen him.
