(N.Z.P.A ’Reuter—Coptirioht) NEW YORK. March 8 A storm battered the United States east coast today. High winds and snow disrupted transport and communications and caused extensive damage to property. An unnamed Navy destroyer being towed to Philadelphia lost a towline in stormy seas off the coast and ran aground, the British United Press reported. Tlie Air Force reported rescue crews were standing by for possible evacuation of its “Texas-tower” radar outpost 150 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Up to two feet of snow fell in some regions of Virginia, and gale-force, snow-laden winds raked New York City and Philadelphia. Some Long Island farnDdes were evacuated from low-lying homes. Three big Atlantic liners were delayed by bad visibility as they headed toward their New York piers.
